			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>During warm weather we love the sun-but it doesn&#8217;t always love us back.  In any season of the year there are dangers to too much sun exposure, and the biggest one is skin cancer.  You are especially vunerable if you spend a lot of time in the sun or have been sunburned, have light-colored skin, hair and eyes, or have a family member with skin cancer.</p>
<p>The Center for Disease Control states:</p>
<p> &#8220;Protection from sun exposure is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days. UV rays also reflect off of surfaces like water, cement, sand, and snow.</p>
<p>The hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daylight savings time (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. standard time) are the most hazardous for UV exposure in the continental United States. UV rays are the greatest during the late spring and early summer in North America.</p>
<p>CDC recommends easy options for sun protection</p>
<ul>
<li>Seek shade, especially during midday hours.</li>
<li>Wear clothing to protect exposed skin.</li>
<li>Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck.</li>
<li>Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.</li>
<li>Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/skin/basic_info/index.htm#uv">UVA and UVB</a> protection.</li>
</ul>
<p>Sun exposure is a human source of Vitamin D.  However, damaging sun rays also present a problem for humans.  Most people meet Vitamin D requirements through the exposure to sunlight, food and supplements. Vitamin D’s role in preventing bone diseases such as osteoporosis is well documented.  You may think that Vitamin D is mostly for bone health.  However, many recent research studies have drawn a clear connection between lack of Vitamin D and a wide variety of serious health conditions, including: several forms of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, alzheimer&#8217;s disease, obesity, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, and increased intake of Vitamin D may reduce their risks.</p>

<p>“What does a stubbed toe or a splinter in a finger have to do with your risk of developing Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, suffering a heart attack or succumbing to colon cancer? More than you might think. As scientists delve deeper into the fundamental causes of those and other illnesses, they are starting to see links to an age-old immunological defense mechanism called inflammation — the same biological process that turns the tissue around a splinter red and causes swelling in an injured toe.</p>
<p>Most of the time, inflammation is a lifesaver that enables our bodies to fend off various disease-causing bacteria, viruses and parasites. (Yes, even in the industrialized world, we are constantly bombarded by pathogens.) The instant any of these potentially deadly microbes slips into the body, inflammation marshals a defensive attack that lays waste to both invader and any tissue it may have infected.
